Victorian Company Wins Top Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Award

Melbourne, Australia - Geomatic Technologies’ work at the forefront of the Australian spatial information industry has been recognised at the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards held last night in Melbourne .

The Victorian Spatial Smart Tag (VSST) — A proof of concept system developed by Geomatic Technologies (GT) in partnership with the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Microsoft, won the award for Industry and Entrepreneurship as well as the spatial industry’s ‘Gold Logie’, the J.K. Barrie Award for the Highest Level of Achievement in Spatial Information.

Mark Judd, Director of Geomatic Technologies was delighted to accept the awards saying, ‘Our team has answered a key question for the industry: how to make spatial information readily available to the wider community. We have proved the Victorian Spatial Smart Tag works, and we are looking forward to working with our partners and moving it into businesses and governments across Australia.’

VSST put a vast array of existing Victorian and Australian spatial datasets, functions, and queries into the hands of non-expert users through one simple access point in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Victorian public servants with no spatial training simply type an address into an office document, at which point the ‘proof of concept’ VSST system automatically recognizes, verifies and geocodes the address against the authoritative Vicmap Address database. Using the verified address the system makes available a map of the address containing Vicmap and other data (for example the Melway street directory and even an aerial photograph) for pasting into documents, web forms or other applications.

GT believes the VSST offers immense potential savings to users through fast and accurate and non technical access to existing and future spatial data.
