Geomatic Technologies Awarded 'Rail Industry Export' Prize at the ARIC Rail Industry Charity Ball

1 August 2007

Sydney, Australia – Geomatic Technologies (GT) received the ARIC Excellence in Export Awards 2007 at the Australian Railway Industry Corporation (ARIC) Rail Charity Ball, held in Sydney on the 18th of July 2007. The Award was presented in recognition of GT's recent AIMS (Asset Inspection Mapping System) Laser Project completed on behalf of New Zealand Railways, Ontrack.

The Project titled 'New Zealand Structure Gauge Encroachment Survey' was recognized for providing a foundation whereby Ontrack can assess the compatibility of key suburban networks to support a variety of freight and passenger rolling stock. "It is the first overseas Laser Encroachment Survey that our staff and systems have been awarded," said David Presley, Business Development Manager, Geomatic Technologies.

The majority of technical know-how required to complete the NZ survey came from GT's recent Australian laser survey project experience. Two features particular to the New Zealand environment requiring innovation included;

  1. The requirement to complete surveys at night mandated testing and fitting of a low-tux Black and White digital camera to the GT field capture system. Imagery was necessary so that the physical structure detected by the laser as encroaching the rail corridor could be properly described.
  2. The requirement to supply track centrelines and encroachment data within Ontrack's existing track kilometreage framework.

Both Auckland and Wellington surveys were conducted over the full extents of each metropolitan network; a total survey comprised of over 400km of track. An Ontrack hy-rail was dedicated to the project and Ontrack arranged for track access and driver services. Approximately 2.5 million laser profiles were generated and assessed against clearance requirements throughout the various metropolitan track networks.
